I recently saw a stream of posts on my social media talking about Netflix documentary ‘What The Health’. The reason this sudden flurry of chatter about the documentary caught my eye was because so many people were writing statements like “Time to go Vegan” or “Wow such an eye opener” and “I’m definitely trying to go Vegan after watching this” and many more comments urging others to go and watch it.

Now let me share a bit of background story about me, I LOVE meat and also dairy in equal measures! A juicy steak, Jerk Chicken or a creamy Yogurt and grilled Halloumi, all foods I absolutely get so much enjoyment from. I am an absolute foodie! I admit it, I’m that chick that will eat even if she isn’t hungry if someone offers up something I really like! Rack of lamb? yassssss hunnay I’m first in line. I admit it, I am that into halloumi that it’s actually borderline an addiction.

So fast forward to 30 seconds after finishing watching “What the health” and my entire perspective had changed. Now, before you start… I appreciate that this documentary is based on the American meat and dairy industry and that it has received some criticism since becoming so popular, but it doesn’t change the information that mostly affected my perspective. Meat and dairy simply aren’t good for you and can cause a multitude of health concerns. So with that in my head I decided from tomorrow I would no longer eat meat, fish or egg and I would become a bonafide vegetarian and also a “Vegan in Training”. My boyfriend also decided to join me as he was of the opinion that any information I had learned that managed to make me of all people stop eating meat must be bad, so he decided to follow suit.

Now the truth, going cold turkey (Excuse the meaty pun) is hard damn work. First comes the meat cravings, then the headaches, then the extreme exhaustion and narcolepsy (I fell asleep mid conversation at least twice), following that you then hit the insomnia phase which happens around the time that you start taking all the correct vitamins, and to top it all off you can become a depressed emotional wreck who will cry at the smell of a bacon sarnie.

Sounds fun right? NOT!

In a nutshell; giving up meat proved to me exactly how many hormones are pumped into the food we eat… why else would I be experiencing such awful withdrawal symptoms? And it wasn’t just me either, my boyfriend Tony experienced the exact same thing as me, I’m pretty sure there was an entire day during this phase we didn’t even say even two words to each other. Another person who found it hard was my younger brother Craig who recently became a complete recluse for two weeks when making the step from Veggie to Vegan. He got so down in the dumps my mum was worried he had legitimate depression and spent a week investigating what could possible be wrong with him. Nope nothing wrong mum! It was simply all the hormones he was used to having in his milk and cheese every day leaving his system and detoxing him from giving up dairy, it made all 3 of us totes emosh! But as quickly as we hit rock bottom, fast forward a few weeks and like a miracle he was happy as larry, as were Tony and I!

So now you feel like a normal human being again what’s next on this wonderful journey!?

So it’s time for the what the F#*k am I supposed to eat phase? The first two months are an absolute myth. You go to Tescos or Sainsburys for your weekly shop and leave with a pile of fruit and cereal bars and not much else! We actually started to have avocado on toast as an actual dinner as we had no clue what to make. I was raised as a meat and two veg type of girl (Get your mind out of the gutter please!) I literally mean chicken, potato, green beans type meals. When you take away the meat it felt like it wasn’t really a dinner so I was lost! But don’t worry because then you get to the everyone wants to buy you a vegetarian cookbook phase Lol…

So I turned Veggie about 4 weeks before my birthday and I received a total of 6 Vegetarian cookbooks for my birthday this year. I have to admit 6 was a little excessive (everyone has the same thoughtful gift idea) however they definitely helped inspire me and show me what a Veggie meal should look like at least. I must admit they did help as all of a sudden I wasn’t so scared of trying to cook meals from scratch that didn’t contain my favourite ingredient…. MEAT! Another thing that really helped was figuring out what supplements to take, I did a lot of research online and came to the conclusion that I needed Iron, Magnesium, Vitamin B complex and Zinc to rebalance my energy, do your own research and work out what you need as it will vary for men and women.

After getting to grips with being a Vegetarian I decided to cut 50% of my dairy intake so I switched cow’s milk for coconut milk, cows yogurt for coconut yogurt and then dairy butter for avocado oil butter, I even started eating dairy free chocolate.

Cheese substitutes are not the one… to me, they taste how a stinky armpit smells. I just couldn’t do it, so as it stands today I have drawn the line at cheese hence the “Vegan in training” status.

Here is a list of my favourite substitutes…

Try Koko Coconut milk

Try Koko Coconut Yogurts

Try Tesco’s Avocado Oil Butter

and finally if like me you love your chocolate & sweets M&S do some wonderful dairy free chocolate

and gelatine free sweets…

Then there is eating out! Well well well… aren’t the majority of restaurants bloody lazy when it comes to veggie options? Mushroom Risotto , Pesto Pasta & Halloumi skewers is that the best you can do guys??? If i’m honest pre Veggie life my staple meal on a night out was an ‘STK’ juicy rib eye steak with chunky chips or Mac & Cheese with a variety of vegetables on the side, or failing that a juicy burger from ‘Burger & Lobster’. Fast forward to my new lifestyle and I basically had to start again when it came to eating out so here is my number one restaurant so far for newbie veggies who miss flavourful food. My number one restaurant choice has to be….

Mint Leaf

Mint leaf is an indian restaurant in the heart of London that is the perfect spot for both meat eaters and vegetarians alike. I recently visited the Mint Leaf with my friend Lara for her birthday and we had the best time. First of all the ambience in this place is perfect for a girly catch up, a business dinner, date night or a family meal…

We went on a wednesday evening so it wasn’t as busy as it would be on the weekend but it still had a sociable vibe and a buzz about it, with cafe de mar chill out style music playing in the background, mood lighting and a cocktail menu to send your taste buds into a spin as well as perfect service we knew immediately it was going to be an enjoyable experience at Mint Leaf.

But let’s talk about the food; before turning vegetarian I don’t think I had ever in my life opted to go to an indian restaurant or even ordered an indian takeaway  to be entirely honest. I had it in my head that I didn’t really like the indian spices and  flavours but Mint leaf just blew my mind. First of all the menu had soooo many options for me and I actually loved every single thing that I tasted. Secondly I have a nut allergy and the menu hardly contains any nuts and the staff were very helpful when it came to navigating my dietary requirements.

The menu was just as exciting to read for the the me the veggie as it was for Lara the meat / fish lover which is rare under one roof!  I’m not even a huge lover of broccoli but the chilli cheese chargrilled version that they served literally had me munching it down like I had never been fed before.

The Kurkure asparagus is a firm favourite of mine along with the Garlic chilli paneer.

My friend lara opted for the Patrani Macchi which was Sea bass wrapped in banana leaf with coriander, chilli and coconut and she said it was delicious and she also loved the chilli calamari dish.  The food was fresh, cooked to perfection and full of flavour the presentation was elegant and simple, instagrammable yet you didn’t mind ruining it by scoffing it down.

This is my number one spot for anyone wanting to experience fine dining and truly tasty vegetarian cuisine. And did I mention the deserts are pretty awesome too?

To say becoming a vegetarian is easy after spending my entire life loving meat would be a lie. But I love how I feel knowing that I am treating my body with more respect and knowing I’m no longer eating food with a face is a good feeling! That doesn’t mean that whenever my mates have fried chicken or a juicy steak I don’t ask to have a sniff for old times sake though! Lol (yes I do this regularly and they’ve finally stopped looking at me like “are you serious woman?!?” As they know I most certainly am! I think it helps to make the change with a family member or a partner for moral support, also to find good spots to eat out like Mint Leaf that give you plenty of tasty options so you never feel like you’re missing out on the good stuff! (Follow Mint Leaf on social media @MintLeafLondon)

With a holiday to Cuba only 4 weeks away I’ve been trawling the internet in search of my next holiday read to take with me on my travels and it occurred to me that i’m always telling my friends when I have read a good book especially if it is one that has helped me in some way or I feel that they maybe need it in there lives.  In fact a lot of my favorite books I no longer even have as I often lend them to friends (of course I never get them back! Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In is a massive cultural phenomenon and its title has become an instant catchphrase for empowering women. The book soared to the top of bestseller lists internationally, igniting global conversations about women and ambition. Sandberg packed theatres, dominated opinion pages, appeared on every major television show and on the cover of Time magazine, and sparked ferocious debate about women and leadership.

Ask most women whether they have the right to equality at work and the answer will be a resounding yes, but ask the same women whether they’d feel confident asking for a raise, a promotion, or equal pay, and some reticence creeps in.

The statistics, although an improvement on previous decades, are certainly not in women’s favour – of 197 heads of state, only twenty-two are women. Women hold just 20 percent of seats in parliaments globally, and in the world of big business, a meagre eighteen of the Fortune 500 CEOs are women.

In Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg – Facebook COO and one of Fortune magazine’s Most Powerful Women in Business – draws on her own experience of working in some of the world’s most successful businesses and looks at what women can do to help themselves, and make the small changes in their life that can effect change on a more universal scale.

So over the years it’s safe to say I have had A LOT of fun with my hair! Long, Short, Black, Brunette, Bleach Blonde, Extensions, Braids … The point being you name it and i’ve done it to my locks. My poor hair has truly been to hell and back and because of that I decided if don’t want to be bald by the time i’m 40 I need to slow it down and start treating my hair with some TLC and respect.

At the start of this year two treatments in particular have caught my attention time and time again so I figured I would road test both and share my review to help you decide on which of these two hero products to pick, if like me your hair is in dire need of a rescue.

Up first it’s OLAPLEX,  this products claims to “Prevent damage & Repair hair” using “Real Science” that delivers “Real Results”. About 10 years ago I bleached a little bit of my hair…. The results were absolutely catastrophic… Think frazzled, dry, yellow, straw like, broken, birds nest. So when on a blogger visit to salon Daniel Galvin my colourist suggested I go from warm blonde of which I had managed to achieve only using high lift tint to a creamy white bleach blonde I nearly ran a mile…

That was until she told be about this new wonder product the hairdressers were adding to the bleach and applying during the colour process to prevent breakage and make the bleach more gentle on the hair. They assured me my issues with bleach in the past were gone with the wind and I could achieve a gorgeous blonde mame with minimal damage.  This is also the moment she slipped into the convo it’s how Kim Kardashian went from black hair to the perfect platinum blonde. SOLD!!!

OLAPLEX is three-step process that includes a patented active ingredient that works on a molecular level to seek out broken bonds in the hair that are caused by chemical, thermal, and mechanical damage. Olaplex restores damaged, broken and compromised hair repair and protects your hair from further damage during colour processing.

STEP 1: Bond Multiplier®

This concentrated first salon step rebuilds broken disulfide bonds and begins the process of preventing damage and repairing hair.

STEP 2: Perfector®

STEP 3: Hair Perfector

This final retail step provides our client’s continuous protection from ongoing damage at home.

Our second salon step continues to rebuild and restore any remaining broken bonds ensuring the strongest, shiniest, and healthiest hair possible.

(For more information visit: https://olaplex.com/)

Now I have to say they spoke the truth, they were NOT selling dreams here! They took my colour from brassy blonde to super blonde and creamy and the damage was barely visible (See top photo). Following my colour treatment I continued to use Olaplex part 3 on a weekly basis as an at home to follow up from my colour treatment, Also if I need a real hair boost Post holiday or before a special event for example I will head to my local Salon BlueTit Peckham for the full professional Olaplex treatment as a stand along treatment. Now the Olaplex honestly is incredible and I haven’t experienced anything like it in the past. But despite this product being amazing in terms of innovation in hair repair treatments  let’ not get too carried away; that’s not to say 6 months into bleaching my roots every 6 weeks I didn’t start to see the damage beginning to appear. Not nearly as bad as previously experiences so the Olaplex certainly helped massively but lets face it bleach is bleach it’s going to damage your hair at some stage, But if you are going to do it… Olaplex is certainly a 100% essential addition to your colour process.

So with that said just 6 months later I said goodbye to the bleach bottle and gave myself a gorgeous hair makeover with Seed Salon in Fulham. It was time to go easy on my hair for the first time in years and transform my hair to a rich warm brunette balyage, whilst keeping my blonde hues on the ends. With my gorgeous new rich brunette coloured hair I wanted to get that shine back and more importantly I wanted the broken hair to regrow, my hair to become more manageable and the overall condition to massively improve. I continued to use Olaplex part 3 on a weekly basis as a part of my at home treatment for my hair and I only colour my hair every 10-12 weeks now. The Olaplex has really helped to get the broken hairs to re grow and i’m seeing the strength in my hair massively improve.

SUMMARY: If you colour your hair don’t be tight with you £££! I know they charge more to include Olaplex into your colour treatment but it is honestly worth the money especially if you are a bleach blonde!  Shanie say’s “10/10 & Worth every penny, If it’s good enough for Kim Kardashian then it’s good enough for me”

Now this product has had a consistent buzz around it for years and for a product to have so much longevity it has to be good! Lots of celebrities claim it’s an essential part of their hair care routine and it sells in huge quantities on QVC where I am a guest beauty expert. It was originally created for Hollywood movie star Audrey Hepburn who complained to Philip Kingsley about the damage to her hair from the constant styling when she was filming. Upon her request, Philip went to work in his Green St. Laboratory and formulated Elasticizer – the world’s first pre-shampoo conditioning treatment, and that was all the way back in 1974.

The thing that struck me about this product is that it despite being designed for Audrey Hepburn this product is genuinely is suitable for ALL HAIR TYPES and that includes Black Caribbean, Asian and African hair as well. Very rarely is a product able to adapt itself to help such very different types of hair. Being Mixed race my hair is naturally curly, sometimes frizzy and always hard work so to hear about such a product had me very very intrigued.

Healthy hair stretches when wet, rather than breaking. Elasticizer helps to reduce breakage, adds elasticity, bounce, shine and manageability and helps to improve the condition of your hair. Hair is not weighed down, but full of body and bounce, making it ideal for even the finest hair textures. Apply Elasticizer once per week, visible results are seen with first use, whilst the texture and condition continue to improve with each use. Elasticizer delivers a rush of moisture into the hair’s cuticle to help reduce breakage and restore the hair’s strength and stretchability, leading to less breakage and snapping.

  • Deeply conditioning; adds elasticity, manageability, bounce and shine

  • Fine
  • Medium
  • Coarse
  • African-Caribbean

So one Sunday afternoon after having a sample from a goodie bag knocking around in my drawer I slapped it on my dirty damp hair and waited 20 minutes with a shower cap on my hair before following up with my regular shampoo and conditioner. WOW WOW WOW.

My hair turned into pure silk, I couldn’t believe my fingers, they literally glided through my hair so easily. My hair felt so moisturised and silky and hydrated and then when I blow dried it it was absolutely dreamy to work with. I had a photoshoot the following day after using this treatment, and the shoot was on a super windy rooftop. Usually when in any amount of wind or harsh weather conditions my hair would become a matted mess but I have to say that having tried out this treatment the day before my hair continued to be manageable and I could still detangle it using just my fingers. I would really recommend this product for everyone with shoulder length hair or longer. I would be a tiny bit concerned to use this if you have super oily hair or very short hair as it could be a little too heavy and create a greasy appearance. But if you’re hair is a longer than a bob you or you have troublesome afro hair you should 100% give this treatment ago.  My boyfriend has Afro Caribbean hair and he keeps stealing mine so that speaks volumes!

SUMMARY: The fact it’s been around since 1974 says a lot about the results, the creator has a science background and has won many awards for his products, use it once a week for the best results. Shanie say’s ” Check out the gorgeous coconut scented version to make this product even more dreamy than it is, if it’s good enough for Audrey Hepburn then it’s good enough for me”

If you have tried either of these products please leave your comments below as I would love to hear how you rate them!

Also if you have other products you think I should try I would love to hear from you.

Thank you for reading

With Love

Micro Needling also known as Skin Rollering, Skin Renewal and Dermaroller in some instances is finally getting the kudos that it deserves in 2017.

This treatment has been on my radar for around 3 years now, however back then it was seen as more of an aesthetics treatment to be performed in a skin clinic or reputable beauty salon. It was also deemed to be quite an invasive treatment so the thought of it being available at home to perform on yourself within the next few years just didn’t seem likely to be apart of the future DIY beauty landscape.

Fast forward just a few years and beauty brand Swiss Clinic have created an easy to use, easy on the eye and super effective DIY micro needling kit that delivers results extremely close to those results expected from a visit to a top Harley Street clinic.

What is Micro Needling?

Micro Needling is a process involving a skin roller device that has hundreds of tiny needles on its surface, you manually roller the device across the skin’s surface to make small micro-channels in the skin. You are effectively puncturing tiny holes into the skin then causing the skin to respond as if it’s been damaged.

It is the world’s most scientifically effective skin renewal treatment, it stimulates and renews the skin cells both within the skin’s deeper dermis layers and on the surface level superficial epidermis. These tiny wounds encourage the body to create a wound healing response and renew the skin cells with excess collagen production. When microneedling you also apply specialist collagen serums directly onto the freshly needled skin allowing the product to push into the skin 300% deeper than when products are applied without the needling.

As the active ingredients work deep into the skin, the treatment is proven to reduces fine lines, wrinkles and scars, softens the skin, stimulates blood circulation, improves elasticity and reduces enlarged pores and gives your skin a youthful glow and luminosity. This effective treatment also leaves your skin with a more even tone, makes it more resilient, and preserves its vitality and energy by slowing down the ageing process.

Priced at £84.00 The Swiss Clinic Skin Roller kit includes the roller itself as well as the skin renewal serum. You have an option of the 0.2 mm or the 0.5mm Rollers. I have both at home myself and I used the 0.2mm for the first week before then moving up to the 0.5 roller after a weekend of skin rest from using the treatment. They recommend using the treatment for 5 days in a row then giving your skin a couple of days rest before starting treatment again for a further 5 days. I must admit the sensation can be a little prickly at first but the skin soon numbs and gets used the sensation, and if you’re a bit of a weirdo like me you might even start to quite like the pain!  It helps to start of with the smaller 0.2mm roller at first before moving up to the 0.5mm roller. It also depends on your skin when making your decision on which size to buy. If you have lots of acne scarring, pigmentation or skin wrinkling then it may be better to go straight for the 0.5mm.

Click Here To Buy The Skin Renewal Roller & Serum – £84.00

I would also recommend buying the Micellar cleansing gel to ensure your skin’s surface is sterile and cleansed adequately Click Here To Buy The Micellar Cleansing Gel – £36.00

You should also ensure you buy the sanitising spray for your skin roller to ensure it is always super clean, when dealing with any device set to puncture micro holes in your face hygiene is key

Click Here To Buy Sanitizing Spray – £11

Now let me be clear this is not a sponsored post! I am sooo happy with the results. Within three days of treatment I was receiving several comments a day about how amazing my skin was. My enlarged pores on my cheeks were noticibly smaller, my skin tone had evened out and my breakouts had cleared. I also noticed my skin looks plumper and my pigmentation had started to fade. Fast forward several weeks and my complexion is that of a 20 year old again. When they say skin renewal they really aren’t kidding!

(5 Minutes Post Treatment)

Like I said above the treatment itself can be a little prickly and post treatment you will have an hour or two of down time as you can experience redness, sensitivity and the similar symptoms of mild sunburn. Its also recommended that you don’t wear make up on any creams outside of the Swiss Clinic serum provided and for this reason I always did my treatments at night, also your skin renews in your sleep so it makes total sense to load your skin with this super collagen boosting active serum before your 8 hours of beauty sleep. Be sure to drink plenty of water when doing any intensive skin treatment, keep your skin super clean and hydrated during the day where possible and avoid being in the sun without an SPF and DO NOT use any self tanning products unless you want your tan to sink into the little wounds and you will look like a plucked chicken ( Not a cute look ever!) and avoid exercise after treatment for around 6-8 hours as excessive sweating can irritate the skin and feel rather stingy (I learnt that one from experience!)  Another tip for the ladies; we are so much more sensitive 7-10 days prior to our periods so my advice is to start this treatment after your next cycle to avoid excess sensitivity to the prickly sensation!

If  you liked this post and it was helpful please leave a comment below, I would also be happy to answer any questions, So just give me a follow on Instagram (@Shanie_Ryan) and leave a comment in the Swiss Clinic post and I will be sure to get back to you.

Much Love and Happy Microneedling
